Insert Date & time problem

Postby jonny5 on Fri May 29, 2009 7:10 am

Hi everyone

I have a little problem inserting a timestamp into a cell. I used the today() function, but this one updates other cells with today() as well.
There is a shortcut in excel with crtl + . and crtl + : for inserting date and time, but I seem to have problems on my virtual keyboard with :
Only crtl + . works and inserts the time.
Is there a possibility to change the shortcut crtl + : to something else? Or do something with the today function, so that the other cells are not updated?

Thanks in advance for an answer.

All the best

Most versions of the Windows CE (Windows Mobile) operating system do not have the ability to process the Ctrl+Shift keyboard combination, so some changes had to be made.

In Microsoft Excel, you can insert a date with Ctrl + ; (semicolon) and a time with Ctrl + : (colon), which is the same as Ctrl + Shift + ; (semicolon).

In Spread32/SpreadCE, you can insert a date with Ctrl + ; (semicolon), and a time with Ctrl + . (period).

Hi Stephenbye

Thanks for the fast answering.

Yes the shift + crtl combination is not working very well. Unfortunately the ; (semicolon) is available with shift + ,
Is it possible to customize shortcuts, so that I can move the date shortcut for example to crtl + , ?

Is it possible to block the update of the other date() cells? Then I might be able to use a conditional function that automatically inserts date + time when I type in text in another cell?

Thanks in advance and all the best

Okay, now I understand. You are not using a US/UK keyboard layout, and so the keys are in a different place. I wil have to figure out a scheme that will allow entry without Shift in all keyboard layouts. What is the keyboard layout that you are using?

You cannot prevent cells containing =TODAY() from updating, as this is a volatile function and it is updated every time something happens.

There are other ways to enter a date value into a cell. See for example the post further down titled "Macro commands conditional on text entered into a cell" by Harry Marshall. In there is an example of a macro that automatically enters a date/time value when something else is entered. Let me know if you would like me to send you an example file.

Okay, I have added Ctrl+, as an alternative key combination for entering the date.
Please let me know which version of the program you are using and I will send you an updated copy.
